The 962 was specifically engineered for IMSA regulations, which required the driver's feet to be positioned behind the front axle. Additionally, the engine was modified to feature a single turbocharger and air-cooled cylinder heads. While initially designed for IMSA, the model was later adapted for Group-C racing and rebranded as the 962C, equipped with a 956 engine.

In 1984, Bob Akin purchased chassis number 962-102, which was a standard 962 model complete with IMSA-tail, turbo bump, and 16-inch BBS wheels. The car had a lackluster first season, with its best performance being a sixth-place finish. However, its fortunes improved in 1985, partly due to its appearance in a Miami Vice episode filmed during the Miami Grand Prix. Sadly, the car met its end in a 1985 crash at Charlotte.

Subsequently, Bob Akin acquired a new chassis, numbered 962-113, and constructed a new vehicle. This updated version included several modifications that had become standard among other racing teams. Notably, it sported a Group-C style short tail and a redesigned turbo bump on the engine cover, making it visually distinct from the original 962-102.
