What is a Fjordling?

The Fjordling, particularly the Fjordling 17, was originally designed in the 1960s by the Norwegian designer Jan Herman Linge. Initially crafted for a modest 20hp outboard engine, the Fjordling 17 has evolved into a cult favorite among boat enthusiasts for its unique hull design. This boat features a sharp V-hull with a 24-degree deadrise, which was groundbreaking at the time for its stability and speed capabilities even with small engines.

Modifications for Racing:

  • Engine Upgrades: Owners often push the limits by fitting these boats with engines far beyond their original specs, with some enthusiasts installing up to 300hp outboards. This transformation turns the Fjordling into a high-speed vessel capable of reaching thrilling velocities.
  • Hull Modifications: The Fjordling's hull includes a patented "water tunnel" which holds water to enhance stability at lower speeds or when stationary. For racing, this design helps in maintaining control and balance at high speeds, although it's more about the raw power and less about the tunnel in competitive environments.
  • Aerodynamics and Weight: To achieve even higher speeds, racers might modify the hull for better aerodynamics, strip down weight, or adjust the boat's trim to optimize lift and reduce drag.

Racing Scene:

In Scandinavia, the Fjordling is not just a boat but a symbol of speed and heritage. They participate in races where the focus is on handling in the challenging waters of the fjords, showcasing the boat's agility and the driver's skill. The races often highlight the boat's ability to handle sharp turns and maintain speed over choppy waters, making for an adrenaline-pumping spectacle.

Why Fjordlings for Racing?

Their design, which was initially for cruising, has proven adaptable and resilient, making them a favorite in both casual and competitive settings. The community around Fjordling racing is tight-knit, with many enthusiasts sharing tips on modifications and racing strategies, enhancing the experience with a blend of nostalgia and modern speed technology.
